Chartering and fractional ownership both put you on a beautiful boat, but they are fundamentally different arrangements. The right one depends on how often you'll actually be on the water, and on whether you want something to show for it afterwards.

Charter: access without ownership

A charter is a rental. You pay for a week, you enjoy the yacht, and at the end you hand back the keys. It's flexible and commitment-free, which is ideal for the occasional trip. But every booking can be a different vessel with a different crew, and none of what you spend leaves you with a stake in anything.

Fractional: real equity in one named yacht

Fractional ownership flips that. You buy a share in the LLC that owns a specific vessel, so you hold real equity in a tangible asset, and you come back to the same yacht and the same crew every time.

  • The same named vessel, not a different boat each visit.
  • Real equity via an LLC, with a transferable, resalable share.
  • Proportional usage: roughly 14 days a year (est.) at a 5% share, on a coordinated calendar.
  • Full management included: crew, berth, insurance, and maintenance are handled.
Charter is money spent. A share is a stake you can pass on.

The cost question

Charter is pure expenditure: enjoyable, but it ends when the week does. A fractional share carries costs proportionally. Entry starts at $150,000 for a 5% share (est.), with shared operating costs of about $32,500 a year at that share (est.). Unused weeks can optionally enter a managed charter program to help offset those costs, which is an illustrative estimate, not a guarantee.

Which one fits you

If you sail once a year and value zero commitment, charter is the sensible choice. If you're on the water regularly and want consistency, a home vessel, and a real stake to hold or resell later, fractional ownership is built for you.
